AQS Challenges

Members of the Grand Rapids Modern Quilt Guild have participated in the AQS Guild Challenge since 2022. We have been selected every year that we have entered and won ribbons in 2024 and 2022.

Our guild's objective was to create eye-catching quilts of postage stamps. Using pixelated images, we were encouraged to stretch and redefine the traditional definitions and techniques of the use of pixels. By varying size, shape, enhancement, and placement, the viewer's eyes are invited to wander over the quilted images, allowing different perspectives depending upon the distance away from the quilt one stands. A secondary goal was to encourage our members to challenge themselves to design a unique piece by breaking apart their image into sub-sections to create interest. They were encouraged to use a new technique, reimagine preconceived ideas, or delve into the unconventional. Most importantly, this endeavor allowed our members to support one another and have fun!

2025 Pixelated Postage Stamps

Our 2024 challenge was to create a quilt based on magnification to explore the invisible beauty of the world. Any type of "lens" was permitted (i.e. microscope, telescope, etc.). Quilts were to be approximately 38" x 38" in finished size and contain a 36" x 36" circle showing the magnified object.

Through the Lens won Third Place.

Quilts should feature a legendary creature commonly believed to be fictitious. They should each be made from an original design. Only one quilt per creature type. They should be approximately 30"W x 38"H and have a black binding with no borders.

All Postcards from Space should use the same 2.5" border and binding fabric provided, measuring approximately 30" high x 44" wide before adding the border, and be titled "Greetings From _________."
